What do these performance measures mean?

National curriculum tests (SATs) are developed to the same specification each year. However, because the questions must be different, the difficulty of tests may vary. This means it is necessary to convert the total number of marks a pupil gets in a test (their ‘raw’ score) into a scaled score to ensure accurate comparisons of performance can be made over time.

Pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths at Key Stage 2

Pupils achieving a scaled score between 100 and 109 will have met the expected standard in reading and maths.  Writing is teacher assessed.

Pupils achieving a higher standard in reading, writing and maths at Key Stage 2

Pupils achieving a scaled score of 110 or more will have met the higher standard in reading and maths.  Writing is teacher assessed.
