'Working Together to Achieve Our Best'

At Springhead Primary School, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive mainstream school where every child is valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential.

We are committed to providing a learning environment where all pupils can access a broad and ambitious curriculum, regardless of their starting points, abilities or additional needs. Through high-quality teaching, targeted support and strong partnerships with families, we aim to remove barriers to learning and enable every child to be successful both academically and personally.

Our vision is that all children feel safe, respected, included and empowered to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need for the next stage of their education and beyond.

Our SEND Vision

At Springhead Primary School we aim to:

  • Provide high-quality teaching and learning opportunities for all pupils.
  • Ensure every child can access a broad and ambitious curriculum.
  • Identify and support SEND needs at the earliest opportunity.
  • Remove barriers to learning and participation.
  • Promote independence, resilience and confidence.
  • Raise aspirations and improve outcomes for all pupils.
  • Work positively in partnership with parents, carers and external agencies.
  • Ensure children with SEND are fully included in all aspects of school life.

What is SEND?

A child or young person has Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.

According to the SEND Code of Practice (2015), a child has SEND if they:

  • Have significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age; or
  • Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.

The Four Areas of SEND

The SEND Code of Practice identifies four broad areas of need:

Communication and Interaction

Children with communication and interaction needs may experience difficulties with understanding and using language, expressing themselves, interacting with others or developing social relationships. This can include speech and language difficulties, social communication needs and autism spectrum conditions.

Cognition and Learning

Children with cognition and learning needs may find learning more difficult than their peers. They may require additional support with reading, writing, spelling, numeracy, memory, concentration, organisation or processing information. This area includes specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)

Children with SEMH needs may experience difficulties that affect their emotional wellbeing, behaviour, relationships and ability to learn. These may include anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional regulation difficulties, attachment needs, bereavement or other mental health challenges.

Sensory and/or Physical Needs

Some children may have sensory or physical needs, including hearing impairments, visual impairments, physical disabilities, medical conditions, fine or gross motor difficulties, or sensory processing differences. Many pupils with these needs will be able to access learning successfully through inclusive classroom practice and reasonable adjustments, but where a child's sensory or physical needs create barriers to learning, participation or independence, additional support, specialist equipment or targeted provision may be provided to ensure they can fully access education and school life.

A Personalised Approach

Every child is unique, and many children may have needs that span more than one area. At Springhead Primary School, we take a personalised approach to understanding and supporting each child's individual strengths, needs and aspirations, ensuring they receive the right support at the right time to enable them to thrive.
