What do these performance measures mean?
The phonics screening check assesses how well pupils can read words using phonics. Although the check follows the same format each year, the words used are different, so the level of difficulty may vary slightly. To ensure results are fair and consistent, a pass mark (threshold) is set each year. This determines whether a pupil has met the expected standard.
Meeting the expected standard (Year 1)
Pupils who score at or above the pass mark are considered to have met the expected standard in phonics. Pupils who do not meet the expected standard in Year 1 will retake the check in Year 2.
Year 2 phonics retakes
Only pupils who did not meet the expected standard in Year 1 retake the check in Year 2. The Year 2 check is the same assessment as the Year 1 phonics screening check. Pupils who meet the pass mark in Year 2 are recorded as having achieved the expected standard.
