Mental Health and Wellbeing at Springhead

At Springhead Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of our pupils is our top priority.

We adopt a child-centred approach, ensuring that every decision we make focuses on the welfare, safety and wellbeing of our pupils. We recognise that children can face a range of challenges that may affect their emotional wellbeing, confidence, relationships and ability to engage successfully in learning.

All staff contribute to providing the very best outcomes for our pupils and work hard to support their health, safety, development and overall wellbeing throughout their educational journey.

We are committed to creating a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where children feel valued, listened to and supported, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally.

What is Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)?

Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs can affect how children:

  • Feel about themselves.
  • Manage emotions.
  • Build and maintain relationships.
  • Respond to challenges.
  • Behave and communicate.
  • Access learning successfully.

Children may experience difficulties relating to:

  • Anxiety
  • Low self-esteem
  • Bereavement
  • Friendship difficulties
  • Emotional regulation
  • Family circumstances
  • Attachment needs
  • Behaviour linked to emotional wellbeing

Some children may require short-term support, whilst others may need more targeted intervention over a longer period.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Support

At Springhead Primary School, we actively promote positive mental health and wellbeing through a whole-school approach.

Pupils are encouraged to recognise, understand and manage their emotions through a variety of wellbeing strategies and resources, including:

  • The Wellbeing Scale
  • The Five Ways to Wellbeing
  • Zones of Regulation
  • Emotional Literacy Support (ELSA)
  • Pastoral support
  • Nurture provision
  • Mental Health Support Team referrals

Our trained staff are able to identify emerging needs and provide support at an early stage. Where appropriate, referrals may be made to outside agencies to ensure children and families receive the support they need.

Wellbeing Scale

Our Wellbeing Scale provides children with a simple and accessible way to identify and communicate how they are feeling.

By developing emotional awareness, children are better able to:

  • Recognise their emotions.
  • Communicate their feelings.
  • Seek support when needed.
  • Develop self-regulation strategies.
  • Build emotional resilience.

Five Ways to Wellbeing

We encourage all pupils to develop positive habits that support long-term wellbeing through the Five Ways to Wellbeing:

Connect

Build positive relationships with friends, family and the wider community.

Be Active

Take part in physical activity and enjoy movement every day.

Take Notice

Be aware of the world around us and appreciate everyday experiences.

Keep Learning

Develop new skills, interests and experiences.

Give

Show kindness, help others and contribute positively to the community.
